A Little Mischief, a Few Chills, and a Whole Lot of Storytelling Await in Decorah This Halloween!
DECORAH, IOWA ~
Well, now, here’s something you don’t hear every day.
Mark Twain is coming back to Decorah!
Yes, THAT Mark Twain.
The white~haired gentleman with the famous mustache, a sharp wit, and a way of telling a story that could make you laugh one minute and think mighty hard the next.
Now, before anybody starts checking the history books…
No, he hasn’t figured out how to return from the great beyond!
But professional actor Ray Carver has a way of bringing the celebrated American author back to life onstage.
And this Halloween, he’s bringing along a few stories that might just send a little shiver down your spine!
👻 A Little Spooky… A Little Funny… and Pure Mark Twain!
On Saturday, October 31, Carver will present A Mark Twain Halloween at T~Bock’s Upstairs in downtown Decorah.
The afternoon performance will feature a collection of mysterious, spooky, and humorous tales drawn from Twain’s writings and experiences.
The program draws from works including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Tramp Abroad, Life on the Mississippi, Sketches New and Old, and Europe and Elsewhere, along with stories from Twain’s years as a journalist.
And if you know anything about Mark Twain, you know he had a special talent for noticing the peculiar things people do.
He could take an ordinary situation, turn it upside down, and somehow make the whole world recognize itself in the telling.
Sometimes he’d make you chuckle.
Sometimes he’d make you squirm.
And sometimes he’d leave you wondering whether the joke might have been on you all along!
🎭 One Man… and a Whole Lot of Characters!
Ray Carver is no stranger to bringing Mark Twain before a Decorah audience.
In June 2025, he entertained local theatergoers with a performance of Life on the Mississippi.
Now he’s returning with a Halloween~themed collection that explores another side of Twain’s remarkable storytelling.
And there’s something special about watching a storyteller work without elaborate scenery or a screen full of special effects.
Just a performer, a voice, a little imagination, and words that have been making people laugh and wonder for generations.
After all, a really good story doesn’t need much else.
📖 The Man Behind the Mustache
Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, Mark Twain became one of America’s most recognizable writers and humorists.
His stories often drew from life along the Mississippi River, his travels, and his sharp observations of human nature.
But Twain wasn’t simply interested in making people laugh.
His writing also explored prejudice, injustice, foolishness, courage, and the contradictions that make human beings so wonderfully complicated.
And while his world looked quite different from ours, many of the things he noticed about people remain surprisingly familiar.
Perhaps that’s why his stories have lasted so long.
Times change.
Clothes change.
The world changes.
But people?
Well… we still give storytellers plenty to work with!
❤️ A Good Story for a Good Cause
There’s another reason this Halloween performance deserves a little hometown attention.
The event is sponsored by the Winneshiek County Historical Society, with proceeds benefiting the organization.
That means an afternoon of laughter and storytelling will also help support the work of preserving and sharing local history.
And isn’t that a rather fitting combination?
One of America’s great storytellers helping support the people who keep our own community’s stories from being forgotten.
Because history isn’t only about dates in a book or photographs tucked away in an old album.
It’s about the people who came before us.
The places they built.
The challenges they faced.
And the stories they left behind.
Sometimes all it takes is one good storyteller to remind us why those things matter.
