The dog thinks every trip to the kitchen might involve a treat.
The cat believes every comfortable chair belongs to them.
And somewhere along the way, those four~legged characters become a whole lot more than pets.

And in Waukon, there’s a hometown business getting ready to celebrate five years of helping people care for those furry family members.
Paws Up Pet Supplies is marking its fifth anniversary with a celebration November 5~7, 2026, at its shop on Spring Avenue.
But behind those five years is a story that makes this milestone especially meaningful.
Because sometimes a dream has to survive more than anybody ever imagined when it first began.
🐶 A Dream That Had Barely Begun
Paws Up Pet Supplies opened in November 2021 with a goal of providing quality pet products, dependable advice, and personal service to local pet owners.
A neighborhood pet shop can become a familiar stop for people who love their animals.
It’s a place where customers can ask questions, find something special for their pets, and enjoy the kind of hometown service that makes small businesses such an important part of a community.
But just a few months after opening, Paws Up faced something no new business owner ever hopes to experience.
In February 2022, a devastating fire struck downtown Waukon, destroying the building that housed Paws Up Pet Supplies.
Imagine that for a moment.
You finally open the doors to a business you’ve worked toward.
You begin welcoming customers.
You start building something you hope will last.
And then, before you’ve even celebrated your first anniversary, the place where that dream began is gone.
That’s the kind of setback that can change everything.

A fire doesn’t simply take away walls and a roof.
For a small business, it can mean losing a location, disrupting operations, and facing decisions that nobody expected to make.
And when a business is still in its earliest months, those challenges can feel especially overwhelming.
Yet Paws Up’s story didn’t end with the fire.
The business continued forward, eventually establishing itself at its present location on Spring Avenue.
And now, nearly five years after opening, it’s preparing to celebrate another milestone.
There’s something worth admiring in that.
Not because the road was easy.
But because the journey continued.
🐾 Five Years Don’t Happen All by Themselves
Running a small business takes more than a good idea.
It takes determination, patience, hard work, and the willingness to keep showing up even when things don’t go according to plan.

Paws Up has acknowledged that its five~year journey has included both successes and difficult challenges.
The business has also expressed appreciation for the customers and community members who have supported it along the way.

And a story that includes finding a way forward after losing the business’s original home.

Sometimes a dream has to change locations.
Sometimes it has to find a new way forward.
And sometimes the road to five years looks nothing like the one somebody imagined on opening day.
