When the Big Trucks Become the Playground

There are certain things little kids simply cannot walk past without stopping.

A fire truck.

A police vehicle.

A giant piece of construction equipment.

And on Saturday, October 10, Decorah is giving kids a chance to do a whole lot more than just look.

Touch A Truck returns from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds, bringing some of those big machines kids see working around town together in one place.

Children will be able to get an up-close look at police, fire and emergency vehicles, construction equipment and city maintenance vehicles.

And this isn’t one of those events where Mom and Dad need to remember to register three weeks ahead of time.

It’s free, there’s no registration required, and families can simply show up.

The event is co~hosted by the City of Decorah Parks and Recreation Department and the Decorah Fire Department in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week.

And after checking out all those trucks, there will even be something to eat.

A free hot dog lunch is planned, with Decorah Rotary volunteers helping grill hot dogs and serve food under the grandstand.

But maybe one of the best parts will be watching a child’s face when something they’ve only seen rumbling down the street is suddenly right there in front of them.

The fire truck isn’t speeding toward an emergency.

The big piece of equipment isn’t working behind a barricade.

For a couple of hours, the trucks are there for the kids.

And you can almost guarantee there will be at least one little one heading home afterward who has suddenly decided exactly what they want to be when they grow up. ❤️🚒
