DECORAH, IOWA ~ Cruise nights usually bring to mind polished chrome, rumbling engines and somebody leaning over an open hood saying, “Now this right here…”
Friday night in Decorah may sound a little different.
A regional EV Cruise~In is being held Friday, August 28, from 6~8 p.m. at Toppling Goliath Brewery, bringing electric~vehicle owners and curious visitors together for an evening centered around cars that plug in instead of filling up.
And you don’t have to own an electric vehicle to come take a look.
The gathering is open to people who simply want to see the vehicles, talk with owners and learn a little more about what it is actually like to drive one.
That may be the most interesting part.
Instead of reading a brochure or watching another commercial, visitors can stand beside the cars and ask the people who actually use them questions:
How far can you really drive?
Where do you charge?
What happens in an Iowa winter?
And perhaps the question many rural drivers are wondering:
Would one actually work for me?
Organizers are also encouraging EV owners to bring their vehicles to the meetup. The first 10 people who signed up to bring an electric vehicle were offered a complimentary Toppling Goliath beer during the event.
There is something rather fitting about calling it a cruise~in.
For generations, cars have given people a reason to gather in parking lots, compare rides, swap stories and peek under the hood.
The technology may be changing.
Apparently the urge to stand around and talk about our cars isn’t going anywhere.
