Viroqua’s free community supper welcomes everyone Monday evening
Sometimes community looks like a big event.
Sometimes it looks like a parade, a fundraiser or a packed gymnasium.
And sometimes it looks like a sloppy joe, a cup of coffee and an empty chair waiting for somebody to sit down.
On Monday, August 24, Good Shepherd Church in Viroqua will host a free community meal from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at 504 S. Main Street.
The meal is being sponsored by the Viroqua Lions Club, with sloppy joes, coleslaw, individual bags of chips, assorted desserts, milk, water and coffee on the menu.
But perhaps the nicest part of the invitation is just three words:
ALL ARE WELCOME.
No complicated explanation.
No need to dress up.
No need to have a reason.
Just come eat.
Come visit.
Come sit beside somebody you may already know, or somebody you haven’t met yet.
Because a community meal is rarely only about food.
Sometimes a person comes because supper sounds good.
Sometimes they come because money is tight.
Sometimes they come because eating alone gets old.
And sometimes they simply need a place where somebody will notice they walked through the door.
That is what makes gatherings like this worth mentioning.
A sloppy joe may fill a plate.
But a chair pulled out for somebody can fill something else entirely.
So if you’re near Viroqua Monday evening and could use a meal, some conversation, or just a place to sit for awhile, there will be a place at the table.
