The Pool Is Going to the Dogs… Literally!

Usually when somebody says something has “gone to the dogs,” it is not exactly a compliment.

But in Monona, Iowa, they mean it quite literally.

On Saturday, August 29, the Monona Family Aquatic Center will welcome a different kind of swimmer when the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa hosts its 2026 Monona Pup Swim.

And judging by the name alone, there may be a whole lot of splashing, shaking, tail-wagging and questionable doggy-paddle technique involved.

The event has become an annual summertime tradition, giving dogs a chance to take over the pool while helping support the work of the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa. This year marks the 17th annual dog swim.

The event is being held at the aquatic center at 100 Bulldog Boulevard in Monona. Admission is $15 for the first dog and $10 for each additional dog, with proceeds supporting the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa.

And really, how often does your dog get to say:

“Move over, humans. This pool is mine today.”

Beyond being a fun way to wrap up summer, the Pup Swim puts a little extra attention on an organization doing important work for animals throughout Northeast Iowa.

That means every wet paw, soaked tennis ball and post~swim shake is helping support animals still waiting for homes of their own.

There is something pretty wonderful about that.

A community pool.

A bunch of happy dogs.

People gathering for an afternoon of fun.

And underneath all of it, neighbors helping animals who need somebody in their corner.

Sometimes supporting a good cause looks serious.

And sometimes…

it looks like a Labrador launching itself into a swimming pool.

So if you happen to hear an unusual amount of barking coming from the direction of Monona on August 29, don’t worry.

The pool has just gone to the dogs.

And for one day, that is exactly how it is supposed to be.
