Sit. Stay. Read Me a Story!

Some reading buddies talk back.

Others just wag their tails. ❤️

At the Decorah Public Library, young readers have an opportunity to practice their reading with an audience that isn’t worried about how quickly they read or whether every word comes out perfectly.

Their audience has four paws.

On Tuesday, October 6, from 4~5 p.m., the library will host Dog Tales, a drop~in program where emerging readers can sit down with certified therapy dogs and their trainers and spend some time reading together.

Children can select a book of their choice and read it with one of the dogs. If there aren’t other readers waiting, they may even keep going with another book.

And there’s something rather sweet about that.

For a child still finding confidence as a reader, reading aloud can sometimes feel like a pretty big thing.

But a dog isn’t worried about a stumbled word.

He’s just happy you’re there.

The library says Dog Tales gives children an opportunity to practice their skills while having positive and affirming experiences with books and the library.

There’s no specific reading level required. Children are ready to participate when they can engage with a book independently and be safe and respectful with the animal visitors. Readers under 8 should be accompanied by an adult.

Dogs and their trainers will be available on a first~come, first-served basis in the library’s Children’s Area on the main floor.

Maybe a child reads an entire book.

Maybe they stumble over a few words.

Maybe somewhere between the first page and the last, reading starts to feel a little less intimidating and a little more fun.

Because sometimes the best reading buddy doesn’t say a single word.

They just listen. 🐕📖❤️
