More Than 300 Pounds of Fresh Corn Donated to The Allamakee County Food Shelf

WAUKON, IOWA ~ Sometimes generosity arrives in an envelope.

Sometimes it comes in a box.

And sometimes it arrives by the armload, still wrapped in green husks and fresh from the field. 🌽

Erin Berns of Waukon recently donated more than 300 pounds of fresh sweet corn to The Allamakee County Food Shelf, providing local individuals and families with something especially welcome this time of year ~ fresh, locally grown produce.

More than 300 pounds is more than a few ears of corn tucked into the back seat.

It meant boxes filled with corn, unloading it, weighing it, moving it inside and getting it ready to place into the hands of Food Shelf clients.

And behind every one of those ears was a simple act of generosity from one neighbor to another.

🌽 Fresh Food Makes a Difference

Shelf-stable foods are an important part of any food pantry, but donations of fresh produce add something special.

They give families an opportunity to take home foods that are in season and provide a little more variety to the groceries available to them.

For some, those ears of corn may become part of a family supper.

They may be boiled on the stove, cooked on the grill or cut from the cob and tucked into the freezer for another day.

However they are used, they began with someone in the community deciding that what she had could be shared.

That matters.

❤️ Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Food shelves aren’t sustained by one person or one organization alone.

They work because communities do.

Every bag of groceries donated, every garden vegetable shared, every volunteer hour given and every financial contribution becomes part of something larger.

This week, that community generosity looked like more than 300 pounds of corn.

The Allamakee County Food Shelf extends a heartfelt thank-you to Erin Berns for her generous donation and for helping provide fresh food to our neighbors throughout Allamakee County.

There may be hundreds of pounds sitting on the scale.

There may be boxes stacked around the room.

But when you get right down to it, what we’re really weighing is something that doesn’t fit very well on a scale at all:

the kindness of one neighbor willing to share with another. ❤️🌽
