And if you’ve been thinking you need to slow down, get outside and enjoy one of them before fall comes knocking, there’s a pretty good reason to head toward Cresco this morning.
Tailwind Acres is opening its farm for U~Pick Flowers today, Saturday, August 29, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. ~ giving visitors a chance to wander among the flowers and take a little bit of late summer home with them.
Tailwind Acres sits on 27 acres where Iowa’s Driftless region meets the open prairie, surrounded by native grasses, mature trees, a pond and small creek. The property includes an early~1900s homestead and renovated dairy barn, and the farm grows chemical~free produce, mushrooms and flowers.
Pick a Bouquet ~ and Stay Awhile
Today’s U-Pick isn’t simply about grabbing some flowers and heading back to the car.
Visitors are welcome to wander the grounds, take photographs, explore the farm’s event spaces, purchase baked goods and enjoy complimentary coffee while they’re there. No reservation is needed.
A pitcher-sized bouquet is $25, including tax, or serious flower pickers can fill a 4-gallon bucket for $60, which the farm estimates will fill about four to five Mason jars.
Bring your own vase if you’d like, and bringing your own flower snips isn’t a bad idea either ~ the farm has some scissors available, but supplies are limited. Payment can be made on-site by cash, check or credit card.
General parking is available in the field across the street, with accessible parking on~site. Pets aren’t permitted during the U~Pick, with the exception of service animals.
Sometimes You Just Need a Morning Among the Flowers
We spend a lot of summer hurrying.
We hurry to mow the grass. We hurry to get somewhere. We hurry through another week and somehow find ourselves wondering where June and July went.
Maybe that’s what makes something as simple as walking through a flower field feel a little more special this time of year.
Summer isn’t quite finished yet.
There’s still time to walk among the flowers, drink a cup of coffee, fill your arms with a bouquet and take the long way home.
