A Little Heat, a Lot of Flavor at Yen Hing Dragon

.

Sometimes the best meals are the ones that arrive without fanfare~ just a welcoming table, a generously filled plate, and the wonderful realization after the first bite that you chose well.

During a recent visit to Yen Hing Dragon Chinese Restaurant in Waukon, Iowa, I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, served with a generous mound of white rice.

The dish arrived hot and plentiful, covered in a rich, glossy sauce and filled with tender pieces of chicken, crunchy peanuts, celery, peppers, mushrooms, and vegetables. Every forkful offered something a little different: a bit of crunch, a touch of sweetness, savory depth, and just enough warmth to make the flavors come alive.

The peanuts added a satisfying texture, while the vegetables helped balance the richness of the sauce. The rice was soft, simple, and exactly what the dish needed, perfect for soaking up every last bit of flavor.

And there was certainly no shortage of food.

This was the kind of serving that makes you pause when it reaches the table and wonder whether you will finish it all, while continuing to take “just one more bite” because it tastes too good to stop.

What stood out most was how comforting the meal felt. It was hearty without being complicated, flavorful without losing the individual ingredients, and filling in the very best way.

Then came the fortune cookie.

Inside was the message:

“Your family will be a source of support and love in September.”

Sometimes a meal ends with dessert.

Sometimes it ends with a small paper reminder that makes you smile, think of the people you love, and tuck the message away rather than leave it behind.

From the generous portion to the satisfying flavors, this visit left us with full plates, full bellies, and a very pleasant dining experience.

For anyone craving a warm and flavorful Chinese meal in Waukon, the Kung Pao Chicken at Yen Hing Dragon may be worth adding to your list.

The Full Belly Report verdict:
A comforting, generously portioned meal with plenty of flavor, texture, and a little kick, followed by a fortune worth keeping.
