Word ’Round Town ~ Tag… You’re It!
WAUKON, IOWA ~ Some folks have a way of making a big difference without making a big fuss about it.
And sometimes, that difference arrives in something as simple as a little ice cream bucket.
Meet Bruce Palmer.
Bruce has a shared garden, a generous heart, and a wonderful habit of sharing what he grows with The Allamakee County Food Shelf.
From time to time, Bruce heads out to this little garden, gathers whatever produce is ready, and brings his harvest to the Food Shelf to help feed neighbors who could use a little extra.
And just last week, Bruce was at it again, bringing another contribution from his garden.
Over time, some of his deliveries have arrived in an ordinary little ice cream bucket, filled with whatever his garden had to offer.
The size of the harvest may change, but the kindness behind it never seems to.
It Isn’t About How Much ~ It’s About Sharing
A garden doesn’t always give us bushels and bushels of vegetables.
Sometimes, there’s just a little of this and a handful of that.
But Bruce doesn’t wait until he has an enormous harvest to share.
He brings what he can.
And that’s what makes his story so special.
Because when you think about it, a few vegetables from one person’s garden might become part of a meal on someone else’s table.
Something Bruce planted, tended, and gathered with his own hands could help nourish a neighbor he might never even meet.
And isn’t that a beautiful thought?
The Little Things That Matter
There’s something wonderfully old~fashioned about sharing vegetables from a garden.
It reminds us of a time when neighbors carried baskets across the fence, left a little something on someone’s porch, or simply shared what they had because that’s what neighbors did.
Bruce’s little deliveries carry that same spirit.
No grand production.
No expectation of recognition.
Just a man sharing the fruits of his labor with people in his community.
And perhaps that’s a reminder for all of us.
You don’t have to have a lot to give a little.
You don’t have to change the whole world to make someone’s day better.
Sometimes, you just have to look at what you have, think about someone else, and share.
A Little Bucket With a Big Message
It’s easy to look at a little ice cream bucket and see nothing more than an ordinary container.
But imagine what it represents when someone fills it with vegetables they’ve grown and carries it somewhere those vegetables can help another family.
There’s time in that bucket.
There’s effort.
There’s the tending of a garden, the waiting for things to grow, and the willingness to share the harvest.
And tucked in among all those vegetables is something you can’t weigh on a scale.
Kindness.
The kind that doesn’t need an audience.
The kind that doesn’t ask for anything in return.
The kind that simply keeps showing up.
Just like Bruce.
Tag… You’re It, Bruce! ❤️
Today, Word ’Round Town is tipping its hat to Bruce Palmer, whose little garden and thoughtful deliveries to The Allamakee County Food Shelf remind us that generosity isn’t measured by the size of the gift.
It’s found in the heart of the person giving it.
And Bruce, we think that little ice cream bucket of yours carries something even more precious than garden vegetables.
It carries kindness.
Thank you for sharing what you grow, for continuing to think of your neighbors, and for reminding us that even the smallest harvest can help make a difference.
Because sometimes, a little garden grows a whole lot more than vegetables.
Sometimes, it grows hope. ❤️
