There is always something good happening nearby, even when it does not make the biggest headlines.
From an original local film and an evening of music beneath the open sky to opportunities for teachers, musicians and families, here are five positive things going ’round Northeast Iowa this week.
1. A Local Film Heads to the Big Screen
A locally created short film will receive its premiere at the Viking 3 Theatre in Decorah on Wednesday, August 5.
The Best Things in Life Are Free celebrates the wonder and abundance of foods gathered from the wild. The free community screening begins at 5:30 p.m. and offers viewers an opportunity to enjoy a locally filmed story on the big screen.
Sometimes the best adventures begin with an empty basket~ and an open eye for what is already growing nearby.
2. Pull Up a Chair for Downtown Music
Downtown Decorah will once again become an outdoor concert venue during Lawn Chair Night on Thursday, August 6.
Musician Mike Munson is scheduled to perform beginning at 6 p.m. on Washington Street near Impact Coffee. Community members are invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in for an evening of free music and small-town fellowship.
It is a simple recipe for a summer evening: a comfortable chair, a good tune and a few familiar faces.
3. New Musicians Are Welcome at Ridgeway Jam
Musicians of different experience levels are invited to gather for an Acoustic Music Jam in Ridgeway on Friday, August 7.
A beginner-friendly jam will be held from 11 a.m. until noon, followed by a potluck at noon and the regular jam from 1 to 4 p.m. New participants are welcome, and a $5 donation is appreciated.
Whether someone arrives with years of experience or is only beginning to find the right notes, the gathering offers a welcoming place to play, listen and learn.
4. A Special Day Will Recognize Local Teachers
The Depot Outlet in Decorah will hold a Teacher Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Classroom and teaching supplies will be available at greatly reduced prices while supplies last. Winneshiek County educators from preschool through college are encouraged to bring a school identification card to participate.
It is a practical way to recognize the teachers who often spend their own time, and their own money, preparing classrooms for another year of learning.
5. Families Can Enjoy a Musical Movie in Waukon
Robey Memorial Library in Waukon is continuing its Musical Movie Month with another afternoon screening on Monday, August 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The library also offers a full calendar of family, educational and community activities throughout the month, giving residents another place to gather, learn and enjoy time together.
A library may be filled with books, but its story is also written through the people who continue walking through its doors.
Keep the Good Going ’Round
These may not be the loudest stories of the week.
But they represent something worth noticing: local creativity, shared music, support for educators, family activities and neighbors gathering together.
And sometimes, five little pieces of good news are more than enough to remind us that something hopeful is always going ’round town.
