Around Northeast Iowa, you don’t have to drive very far before a familiar flash of green and yellow appears.
It might be working a field.
Sitting beside a barn.
Or heading down a country road while the rest of us patiently follow behind. 😂
But in Waterloo, there’s a place where those familiar green machines tell a much bigger story.
The John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum sits on the site of the company’s first tractor factory and takes visitors through the evolution of machines that helped transform farming.
Inside, visitors can travel through generations of agricultural history, from the company’s early beginnings with the steel plow to tractors, engines and increasingly sophisticated farm machinery. Historic equipment, artifacts and interactive exhibits help tell a story that is about much more than machinery.
It’s also a story about the people who used it.
From the Field to the Family
For generations of Iowa families, a tractor wasn’t something admired from behind a museum rope.
It worked.
It planted. It pulled. It hauled. It helped put crops in the ground and bring harvests out of them.
And quite often, it became part of the family’s memories.
Ask someone who grew up around farming about an old tractor and you may get much more than a make and model.
You might hear about Grandpa’s tractor.
The first one Dad bought.
The tractor somebody learned to drive on.
The one that refused to start when everybody desperately needed it to.
Sometimes the reason? Operator error! 😂

Or perhaps the old machine that hasn’t worked in years but somehow nobody in the family can bring themselves to sell.
That’s what makes a place like the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum particularly interesting here in Iowa. The machines help tell the history of agriculture, but they can also bring back pieces of our own histories.

Admission to the museum is FREE.
The museum is open to the general public, and John Deere currently lists hours as Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
That makes it an easy addition to a Waterloo day trip ~ whether you’re a lifelong Deere enthusiast, interested in Iowa and agricultural history, bringing along children who think enormous tractors are about the greatest things ever invented, or simply looking for somewhere different to explore.
