An older gentleman stood at the checkout with only a few things in his cart.
Bread. Milk. A small package of meat. A couple of cans.
When the cashier gave him the total, he looked down at the money in his hand and quietly asked if she could take a few things back.
The woman waiting behind him didn’t make a big announcement.
She didn’t ask his name.
She simply stepped forward and said, “Leave it all there. I’ve got it.”
He turned around, surprised, and tried to tell her she didn’t need to do that.
She smiled.
“I know. That’s why I want to.”
A few minutes later, two strangers walked out different doors and probably went on with completely different lives.
There was no photograph.
No one standing nearby asking for recognition.
Just groceries that stayed in a cart instead of being put back on a shelf, and one person who went home knowing that, for at least that moment, somebody cared.
Sometimes kindness doesn’t change the whole world.
Sometimes it simply changes the way the world feels to one person for the rest of the day. 🦋
