Award-Winning Seraph Brass Brings an Evening of Music to Decorah!
DECORAH, IOWA ~ Friday, October 30, 2026
Have you ever heard a piece of music that made you sit up a little straighter, gave you goosebumps, or left you wondering how in the world somebody could make an instrument sound quite like that?
Well, Decorah has a special musical evening coming its way tonight!
And this time, it isn’t a guitar, piano, or fiddle taking center stage.
It’s BRASS! 🎺
Five accomplished women, five brass instruments, and a whole lot of musical talent are coming together as Seraph Brass takes the stage at Luther College.
The award~winning ensemble will perform tonight from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
And whether you’re a longtime lover of instrumental music or someone who has never attended a brass concert before, this might be an opportunity to discover something wonderful.
🎶 Now That’s a Whole Lot of Breath and Talent!
When folks think of brass instruments, they might picture a marching band, a school concert, or the grand sound of a trumpet announcing something important.
But bring five exceptional brass musicians together, and those instruments can create an entirely different musical experience.
Seraph Brass features two trumpets, a horn, a trombone, and a tuba.
Each has its own musical personality.
The trumpet can shine bright and clear.
The horn brings a warm, rounded voice.
The trombone can be bold and expressive.
And that big ol’ tuba?
Well, don’t underestimate the fellow holding down the bottom of the music!
Together, those five voices can create sounds ranging from delicate and thoughtful to rich and powerful.
❤️ A Little Girl With a Dream Might Just Be Listening
There’s another special part to this musical story.
Seraph Brass is an all~woman ensemble, founded by trumpet soloist Mary Elizabeth Bowden to highlight the extraordinary abilities of women who play brass instruments.
Now in its 13th season, the group has traveled internationally, earned recognition for its performances, and received the American Prize in Chamber Music.
Its musicians also champion new compositions, including works by composers whose music deserves greater attention.
But beyond the awards and concert halls, there’s something else worth thinking about.
Somewhere, a young girl might be holding a trumpet for the first time.
Maybe she’s wondering whether she can learn to play it.
Maybe she’s never seen women performing together in a professional brass ensemble.
And maybe hearing musicians like these will help her imagine what might be possible.
Sometimes inspiration doesn’t arrive with a speech.
Sometimes it arrives in the sound of a single note.
🎼 Bringing More Than a Concert to Campus
The visit is also part of a larger musical opportunity at Luther College.
Members of Seraph Brass are participating in the 2026 Luther College Brass Symposium, scheduled for October 30~31, where they will lead masterclasses.
That means the musicians aren’t simply arriving to perform and heading back out the door.
They’re also sharing their knowledge and experience with other musicians.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
Because musical talent is a wonderful gift.
But helping somebody else discover and develop their own talent?
That’s a gift that can keep on giving.
