ELKADER, IOWA ~ This weekend, you won’t have to walk through gallery doors to find art in Elkader.
Just head for the park.
Art in the Park Fine Art Festival returns to Founders Park along the Turkey River Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, turning a piece of downtown Elkader into an outdoor celebration of creativity.
And this isn’t simply a place to walk past a few craft tables.
Art in the Park is a juried fine~art festival, bringing artists and their work together in one of Elkader’s prettiest community spaces. Visitors can browse and shop the work of fine artists while enjoying live music, food and drinks throughout the weekend.
The kids aren’t being left on the sidelines, either.
Free children’s art activities are part of the festival, making this one of those weekends where a youngster might arrive simply tagging along with Mom or Dad ~ and leave having discovered that making art can be just as much fun as looking at it.
There’s something rather fitting about holding an art festival here.
Founders Park itself has a story. The nearly 11~acre park was developed on land acquired following the 2008 flood, with community visioning helping shape what the area could become. Today, it has been transformed into a place for recreation, gatherings and community events.
And for one October weekend, it becomes something else, too:
An art gallery without walls.
Art in the Park runs 10 a.m.~5 p.m. Saturday, October 3, and 10 a.m.~3 p.m. Sunday, October 4, at Founders Park, 302 S. Main Street in Elkader. Admission and parking are free.
Maybe you’ll find a piece of art you can’t leave without.
Maybe one of the kids will create something of their own.
Or maybe you’ll simply spend an autumn afternoon beside the Turkey River, surrounded by people who still believe there’s something pretty special about making things with their own two hands. ❤️
