A New Hampton Holiday Tradition Is Getting Ready to Shine Again

NEW HAMPTON, IOWA ~ It may only be October, but in one Northeast Iowa community, preparations are already beginning for a little Christmas magic.
And behind those twinkling lights is something that makes the season even more special.
Neighbors lending a helping hand.
Each holiday season, New Hampton’s Mikkelson Park becomes home to Little Light of Mine, a community Christmas light display that brings a festive glow to the park.
Local businesses and area organizations contribute decorative displays, creating a holiday attraction for families and visitors to enjoy.
But before those lights can brighten the winter evenings, there’s work to be done.
And this year, Chickasaw County 4~H is inviting additional helping hands.
A Tradition Built by Community
According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s October newsletter, volunteers are needed to help set up and reinforce the Little Light of Mine display so it can withstand Iowa’s winter weather.
The work is scheduled for Sunday, November 15, 2026, immediately following the Chickasaw County 4~H Awards Banquet.
The banquet begins at noon at Poor Richards Restaurant in New Hampton.
Afterward, volunteers are invited to gather at the park and help prepare the display for the holiday season.
It’s one of those behind~the~scenes efforts that visitors might never think about while admiring the finished decorations.
Someone has to arrange the displays.
Someone has to help secure them against the wind.
And someone has to care enough to give a little of their time.
More Than Christmas Lights
There’s something wonderful about a community tradition that depends on people working together.
The businesses and organizations that contribute displays, the volunteers who help prepare them, and the families who come to enjoy them all become part of the tradition.
For children, the finished display may simply look like Christmas magic.
For the people helping behind the scenes, it’s a reminder of what a community can accomplish when everyone contributes a little something.
And perhaps that’s part of what makes small~town Christmas traditions so memorable.
They’re not just about decorations.
They’re about the people who make them possible.
A Little Light Goes a Long Way
According to Travel Iowa’s 2026 holiday calendar, Little Light of Mine is scheduled to welcome visitors November 27 through December 31, 2026.
The drive~through display features festive decorations and creative holiday scenes throughout Mikkelson Park.
Special activities, including visits from Santa and fireworks, have also been associated with the celebration. Visitors should check the organizers’ announcements for confirmed 2026 activity dates.
For those interested in helping prepare this year’s display, Chickasaw County Extension can provide additional information.
And when those Christmas lights begin shining across Mikkelson Park later this year, visitors might remember something worth celebrating.
Behind every beautiful community tradition are people willing to help keep it alive.
Sometimes it takes a whole town to make a little light shine. ❤️
