They Didn’t Just Rename a 50~Year Tradition ~ They Asked the Community What Should Come Next

ELKADER, IOWA ~ After 50 years, it would have been pretty easy to change the name on the sign, print some new flyers and call it good.

But that’s not quite what happened at Osborne.

For decades, families headed to Osborne Visitor Welcome Center and the surrounding Osborne Park each fall for Heritage Days ~ a celebration that took visitors back to pioneer times.

Then came 2025.

The 50th Heritage Days would also be the last one…

at least, as everyone knew it.

But Clayton County Conservation wasn’t ready to simply throw away a half~century tradition.

Instead, they asked a pretty important question:

What should come next?

So They Asked the People Who Come

In early 2026, Clayton County Conservation held a series of public listening sessions ~ including in-person meetings and a Zoom session ~ specifically to hear ideas about the future of the annual Osborne festival.

They listened to former participants.

They gathered ideas from the community and staff.

And from those conversations came something new:

Osborne Days.

The first Osborne Days will be held October 10~11, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Less About Looking Back ~ More About Bringing It All Together

The old Heritage Days had a strong pioneer~history focus.

Osborne Days is widening the lens.

The new festival will mix conservation, outdoor recreation, education, local creativity and fall fun.

Plans include geocaching, hiking and trapping demonstrations, conservation education, hands-on activities and family~friendly booths. A marketplace will feature locally and regionally made foods, crafts, artwork and other handmade goods.

Clayton County Conservation recently announced that organizations expected to participate include the Iowa DNR, Trout Unlimited, Iowa Wildlife Federation, Iowa Prairie Network, ISU Forestry, Effigy Mounds and others.

And admission?

Free. ❤️

And Apparently We’re Going to Need a BIG Pumpkin

Because no fall celebration would be complete without somebody quietly thinking:

“I bet my pumpkin is bigger than yours.”

Sunday brings both a Biggest Pumpkin Contest and a Best Decorated Pumpkin Contest.

The giant ones will be weighed.

The decorated ones will be displayed.

And somewhere in Clayton County right now, we strongly suspect somebody is looking at a pumpkin and whispering:

“Keep growing, buddy. We’ve got a competition to win.”

❤️ Sometimes Keeping a Tradition Means Letting It Change

It would have been easy to say:

Heritage Days lasted 50 years. It’s over.

Instead, the people at Osborne essentially said:

The old event mattered. So let’s ask the community what the next one should become.

The pioneer history isn’t being erased from Osborne itself ~ the park still has its Pioneer Village and longstanding historical features.

But its big fall weekend is getting room to grow into something different.

Something that reflects not only where Northeast Iowa has been…

but the land, people, skills and interests that are here today.

So when October rolls around, an old fall tradition won’t exactly be disappearing.

It’ll just be opening the door to its next chapter.

And for the very first time…

Welcome to Osborne Days.
