✋ A High 5 for 5 Good Things Goin’ ’Round Town
There’s a whole lot of good tucked into the calendar this week ~ from helping save lives to tagging butterflies, making music and celebrating local creativity. Here are five things worth a High 5.
1. Waukon rolls up its sleeves today ❤️
The Waukon Community Blood Drive is happening today, Tuesday, September 1, from noon~5 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Waukon. This month’s drive is shining a light on children and families facing cancer and sickle-cell disease, many of whom depend on blood transfusions during treatment. One donation can potentially help as many as three patients. That’s a pretty powerful way to spend part of an afternoon.
2. A night devoted to women’s wellness in Waukon 💕
Also happening today, September 1, is the annual Women’s Wellness Night Out from 4~7 p.m. at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion. Nearly 50 health, wellness and family organizations are expected, along with seven speakers covering everything from stress reduction and pain management to women’s health and scam protection. Proceeds from the evening’s raffle help the Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary purchase an electronic exam table for the Waukon Medical Clinic.
3. Monarchs are getting a little traveling identification 🦋
On Wednesday, September 2 at 4:30 p.m., Decorah Parks and Recreation is hosting free Monarch Butterfly Tagging at the Decorah Butterfly Garden. Participants can learn about monarchs and their incredible fall migration while helping tag butterflies as citizen scientists. It’s free, open to all ages and no registration is required. Now THAT sounds like a Butterfly Moment waiting to happen.
4. Bring a lawn chair ~ Decorah is bringing the jazz 🎶
Downtown Decorah’s Lawn Chair Night returns Thursday, September 3 at 6 p.m. on Washington Street near Impact Coffee. This week features the Driftless Jazz Collective, with the evening also serving as a welcome-back celebration for the Luther College community as the new academic year gets underway.
5. Northeast Iowa artists get an early spotlight 🎨
On Friday, September 4, ArtHaus in Decorah is hosting the Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour Preview. The preview gives visitors an early look at work from this year’s Studio Tour, which will feature 41 artists across 31 studios. It’s a chance to meet artists, see what they’ve been creating and get a little taste of October’s full tour before it arrives.
And there we have it ~ five good things already making their way ’round Northeast Iowa this week.
High 5, Northeast Iowa! ✋
