CEDAR FALLS, IOWA ~ Somewhere in Cedar Falls, a child is about to be handed a job that some of us book lovers have been preparing for our entire lives.
Librarian.
Well… librarian for an afternoon.
Cedar Falls Public Library is bringing back its Kid Librarian program beginning September 1, giving children an opportunity to do something most library visitors never get to do:
Create their very own book display.
Each month, one lucky young reader is selected to become a Kid Librarian for an afternoon.
Instead of someone else deciding which books deserve the spotlight, the young librarian gets to create a display based on their own interests, and that display remains in the Youth Department for the month.
Think about that for a minute.
A child walks into the library as a reader…
and leaves knowing other children might discover their next favorite book because they put it there.
That’s pretty neat.
It also raises one extremely important question:
If You Were the Librarian, What Would YOU Put on the Shelf?
Dinosaurs?
Horses?
Mysteries?
Space?
Dogs?
A book you’ve read approximately 47 times despite your mother suggesting there are several thousand other books in the building?
Whatever the answer, that’s part of what makes this little program special.
Libraries aren’t simply buildings where adults decide what children ought to read.
They’re places where children can discover what they love to read.
And for one afternoon in Cedar Falls, a kid gets to say:
“These are the books I think you should try.”
We think that’s a pretty good recommendation to have on the shelf. ❤️📚
