Phillies Top Twins 7-1 as Field of Dreams Welcomes Major League Baseball Back to Iowa
DYERSVILLE, IOWA ~ There are baseball fields.
And then there is a baseball field surrounded by rows and rows of Iowa corn, where for one summer evening the lights come on, thousands gather and Major League Baseball feels just a little less like a professional sport and a little more like something out of a dream.
On Thursday, August 13, Major League Baseball returned to the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville for the first time in four years, bringing the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies to Northeast Iowa for a regular-season game unlike just about any other on the schedule. It was the third MLB game played at the famed Iowa location, following games in 2021 and 2022.
And this time, Philadelphia owned the night.
The Phillies defeated the Twins 7-1, led by Kyle Schwarber, who went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. His first home run came on just the third pitch of the game, sailing over the right-field wall and into the rows of corn beyond it.
If ever there were an appropriate place for a baseball to disappear into a cornfield, this was it.
Philadelphia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never gave it back. Minnesota’s Luke Keaschall answered with a solo home run in the second, but the Phillies continued pulling away.
Schwarber added his second homer in the fourth inning, Bryce Harper drove in another run, and Brandon Marsh later sent a two-run homer toward the corn in the seventh to give Philadelphia its final 7-1 advantage.
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola held Minnesota to one run on five hits over five innings while striking out nine.
But Thursday night’s story was bigger than a box score.
Baseball Came Back to Iowa
The Field of Dreams game hadn’t been played since 2022.
The first Major League game at the Dyersville site came in 2021, when the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 9-8 on a walk-off home run. A year later, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2.
Then the cornfield went quiet ~ at least as far as Major League Baseball was concerned.
Until this week.
The 2026 game also marked the first MLB matchup played at the renovated Field of Dreams ballpark, giving fans another chapter in the story of a place that began with a movie and somehow became part of real baseball history.
Two days before the major-league game, baseball had already returned to the site when the Triple-A Iowa Cubs and St. Paul Saints played there on August 11.
A Little Baseball History Walked Onto the Field, Too
Thursday’s gathering wasn’t only about today’s players.
More than 25 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame were expected to participate in the pregame festivities, one of the largest gatherings of living Hall of Famers at a single game in nearly two decades.
The Phillies and Twins also stepped onto the field wearing specially designed retro uniforms, adding another nod to baseball’s past.
It was fitting.
Because Field of Dreams has never really been about baseball alone.
The original 1989 movie turned an Iowa cornfield into a story about fathers and sons, second chances, memories, dreams and that strange way a simple game can connect one generation to another.
Nearly four decades later, people are still coming.
And This Time, the Country Was Watching Iowa
The game was streamed nationally on Netflix, putting Dyersville~ cornfields, farm country and all~ before baseball fans across the country.
For Iowa, that may be one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole thing.
For one night, the national sports world wasn’t looking toward New York, Los Angeles, Chicago or another giant stadium surrounded by skyscrapers.
It was looking toward Dyersville, Iowa.
Toward corn.
Toward farmland.
Toward a baseball diamond tucked into the countryside.
And toward a little piece of Iowa that somehow became one of baseball’s most recognizable places.
The Phillies will take the 7-1 victory home with them.
The statistics will go into the record books.
And tomorrow, somewhere else, another baseball game will begin.
But there aren’t many places where a home run can disappear over the fence and quite literally land among the corn.
There aren’t many places where baseball history, Hollywood and an Iowa summer night all meet in the same field.
And there certainly aren’t many places where one old movie line still seems to work nearly forty years later.
They built it.
And once again, they came.
